Community Power Group and University of Virginia civil engineering students celebrated Earth Day this year by visiting the Ivy Landfill site which is undergoing construction to be repurposed into a solar facility. The otherwise unusable land is getting a second life with solar and will generate enough electricity to power approximately 750 homes. CPG partnered with the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority and Dominion Energy to develop, design, and construct this landfill into a 3 MW solar site. Additionally, CPG served as an advisor to a group of fourth-year civil engineering students who used this project as a case study to design their own version of a solar facility on the landfill. As part of their capstone project, they were able to visit the landfill site, just 20 minutes from the University, where they got to witness first-hand the active construction work that is being done to turn this land into a renewable source of energy!
News stations came out to interview the students and track the progress of construction. To learn more, we encourage you to check out the full story from 29 News here: https://www.29news.com/2025/04/21/uva-students-get-behind-the-scenes-look-dominions-first-solar-project-closed-landfill/
